REQUEST FOR COUNCIL CONSIDERATION Agenda Section: Item 2
STAFF REPORT Report Number: 91-8A
11176
° AGENDA SESSION DATE /7 , /9V/ Report Date: May 6', 1991
DISPOSITION
Item Description: Staff Report Regarding Sprinklers for Silver View and Greenfield Parks
Administrator's Review/Recommendation:
- No comments to supplement this report
- Comments attached.
Explanation/Summary (attach supplement sheets as necessary.)
SUMMARY:
Monies were budgeted for additional sprinkling of the soccer field and picnic shelter area at
Silver View Park and for the landscaping area at Greenfield. These areas have been or will be
newly seeded or sodded. Water sprinkling is paramount in the survival of the grass. The
sprinkling systems are intended to provide a nice turf in the parks with as little manhours for
upkeep as possible. These areas are highly used by the public and there is a great need for
sturdy turf. A total of $6,700.00 was budgeted for the additional lines to already present
sprinkling systems at both parks. The lowest bid exceeds the budgeted amount by $2,751.00.
However, also in the parks capital budget is funding for park equipment installation. That
budgeted amount is $5,000.00. This money was budgeted with the expectation that contracted
services for installation of park capital equipment would be necessary for the installation of the
playground equipment at Silver View Park. However, the Mounds View Lion's Club is funding
the installation as well as the equipment. Staff requests the council to consider the transfer of
$5,000.00 budgeted for equipment installation for the sprinkling project. The benefits of the
sprinkling system additions are:
• 0 - - . - . n I t of sod which_was1aid_last_year.
2. To reduce the amount of manhours necessary to maintain park grounds.
3. To preserve the quality of the park grounds and facilities.
4. To facilitate the opportunity to seed and landscape these park areas.
5. To keep up with the high volume of use in these two community parks.
There is no explanation as to the discrepancy in costs for adding additional sprinkling at these
two sites. Estimates were requested at budget time last year and the estimated amounts were
budgeted. However, the amounts of the bids exceeded the estimated prices.
RECOMMENDATION:
To approve the transfer of $5,000.00 budgeted for park equipment installation for installation of
additional sprinkling at Silver View Park and Greenfield Park.
