Item No: 8B <br />Meeting Date: July 10, 2006 <br />Type of Business: Consent Agenda <br /> <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Mike Sommer, Police Chief <br />Item Title/Subject: Authorization to enter into a grant agreement with the <br />Minnesota Department of Public Safety, Office of <br />Traffic Safety Safe and Sober project <br />Date of Report: July 10, 2006 <br /> <br />Background: The Mounds View Police Department in partnership with the Ramsey <br />County Sheriff’s Department the Police Departments of New Brighton, Roseville, <br />Maplewood, St. Anthony Village, and White Bear Lake applied for and have been <br />awarded a grant from the Department of Public Safety for the Safe and Sober project. <br />The purpose of the grant is to allow agencies to conduct highly publicized, overtime <br />enforcement projects addressing traffic safety issues with an emphasis on impaired <br />driving and passenger protection use. The Safe & Sober Grant Program provides funds <br />to law enforcement agencies to conduct stepped-up traffic enforcement and community <br />outreach. Each year, requests for Safe & Sober overtime grants equal about twice the <br />federal funding available. The grant funds are available on a cost reimbursement basis; <br />costs are reimbursed after they are incurred and paid by the grantee agencies. The <br />project year begins on October 1, 2006 and ends on September 30, 2007. The Mounds <br />View Police Department is expected to be granted approximately $10,000.00 for the <br />program. The Mounds View Police Department was awarded a Safe and Sober grant in <br />2005-2006 in partnership with the New Brighton Department <br /> <br />The Mounds View Police Department will use the funds from the grant to pay officers to <br />work various traffic enforcement projects. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />Recommendation: Staff recommends Council authorize acceptance of the grant. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> _______________________ <br />Respectfully submitted by <br />Mike Sommer, Police Chief <br />
