Item No. 11B1
Meeting Date: October 23, 2006
Type of Business: Reports
WK: Work Session; PH: Public Hearing;
CA: Consent Agenda; CB: Council Business
Administrator Review:___

City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Greg Lee, Director of Public Works

Item Title/Subject: Discussion of Random Park Building Electrical
Change - Addition of Wires and Switches to Allow for
the Installation of Ceiling Fans

Background:
The Random Park building was originally constructed with the intention to be
used as a three-season building.

Discussion
The Random Park building has a tall peaked ceiling. This type of ceiling makes
providing an even heat throughout the building inefficient and difficult to achieve.

Staff is recommending the addition of electrical lines and switches to provide
power to two ceiling fans that could be added to the peak of the building. The
cost for this electrical work is $1,070.

The proposal would be to authorize the installation of the electrical lines and
switches at this time, before the contractor completes the interior walls and
sprays the ceiling. This item would come back to the City Council as an official
change order at a later date. Staff would then purchase and install the fans.

Since this building will be used extensively throughout the winter months, adding
ceiling fans to the Random Park building should reduce the heating costs. As an
additional benefit, ceiling fans would also reduce cooling costs during the
summers months and provide even temperature control throughout the year.

The contractor will be finishing the interior walls during the week of October 23rd.
Should the City Council wish to install ceiling fans in the Random Park building,
installing the wires at this time will allow them to be placed behind the walls and
not be exposed.
