\Ara10
411 MEMORANDUM
Memo To :Mayor and Council Members
From :Ric Minetor, Acting Clerk-Administrator
k--AAdministrator
Date :August 1, 1990
Subject :Space Needs Study
After discussions with Dan Boxrud of Short-Elliott-Hendrickson,
we determined that there is no need for a foundation analysis at
this time. Our borings indicate a natural sand at the elevation
of the footings and this would provide adequate soil bearing
pressure for standard footings. The water table concern is best
addressed by reviewing past water table observations and history
of the current building. The level of the water table slopes
downward from north west to south east in this area of the City.
The current building has experienced high ground water problems
and the current sump pumps have run for extended periods during
wet years. The construction of a basement north west of the
existing building would be certain to experience the same problem
and possibly the water table may be slightly higher. This meads
that any basement under a new addition would require an extensiV6
• drain system and sump pump. I believe it is technically feasibi6
to design and construct an appropriate system; however, the
Council must determine if the long term operating and maintenance
costs are reasonable for the space derived from a basement.
Attached is a copy of the executive summary from The Alliance,
they indicate that the formal report will be available Monday or
Tuesday.
•
