. MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR
PARKS, RECREATION& FORESTRY
DATE: AUGUST 1, 1990
SUBJECT: PARK BOND REFERENDUM
At the regular Parks and Recreation Commission meeting held
Thursday, July 26, 1990, the Commission discussed their thoughts
regarding a Parks Bond Referendum. The Parks Bond Referendum was
introduced after receiving the results of the city survey. Many
people indicated their desire for more park facilities and even
indicated a willingness to pay for additional facilities.
The Parks and Recreation Commission recommends a small parks bond
referendum, minimum amount of $300,000. Their strong opinion is
that it should be in combination with the City Hall/ Police
Department addition.
The Commission feels that offereing new facilities in all the parks
would provide everyone with the idea that they are getting
something. Also, the Commission believes that a park bond
referendum offering a good parks hard surface pathway system would
be a popular project. Hard surface pathways offer many activity
alternatives including bicycling, walking, skateboarding,
rollerblading and use by strollers and wagons for family outings.
411 Also, hard surface pthways can be used by a wide age range, infants
to Senior Citizens.
Other projects that the Commission brainstormed as popular or
necessary park improvements include:
HARD SURFACE PATHWAYS - at Silver View, City Hall, Arden, Groveland
and Greenfield parks (also serving Oakwood park neighborhood)
NEW PLAY EQUIPMENT - at Silver View, Lambert, Random
NEW HOCKEY BOARDS - at Woodcrest, Lambert, Hillview
GLIDER SWINGS - at Random, Arden, Greenfield, Silver View and City
Hall
DECORATIVE TRASH RECEPTACLES - at all the parks
DRINKING FOUNTAIN - at Oakwood and Silver View (all parks will
then have water)
EXERCISE COURSE - at City Hall and Silver View
SMALL PICNIC SHELTERS - at Greenfield and Groveland
40 The Commission requested that I relay their thoughts to the City
Council regarding a Park Bond Referendum on August 6, 1990.
