MEMO TO: MICHELLE WREN, CITY PLANNER
ID FROM: RICK WRISKEY, CITY FORESTER
DATE: JANUARY 11, 1990
SUBJECT: LANDSCAPE PLAN - HIGHWAY 10 PHILLIPS 66
I reviewed the landscape plan for the Highway 10 Phillips 66 and have the following
comments and suggestions:
1. The planting areas to the south and east seem well planned and should be an
asset to the site, even with minimum maintenance.
2. The selection of green barberry (GBB) in the two northwest planting beds
would, in my opinion, be a mistake. This species can become a nuisance in the
landscape because it is hard to trim, collects paper and litter in its thorns, and
dies off in part or whole due to disease and winter damage. The northernmost
strip of plants would be compacted by plowed snow; for sure barberry here
would not be wise. I would suggest, as substitution, something more durable
and problem-free such as Anthony waterer or gold flame spirea. A low growing
juniper might also fit the site.
i3. The emerald mound honeysuckle, proposed for the two areas either side of the
stations car wash, has not done well on many sites in Mounds View.
would suggest as replacements Clavey's dwarf honeysuckle, dwarf Korean lilac
or again the higher growing spireas.
4. With the experience of trying to keep landscape plants alive in Mounds View
soils for the last three years, I would strongly recommend irrigation for this
site.
RW/SL
i
