Phoenix, Arizona <br /> ' In 1979 the City of Phoenix, Arizona presented a study to determine if there <br /> was a relationship between arrests for sexual crimes and locations of adult <br /> businesses. This study used the method of establishing "Study" and "Cont-ol" <br /> areas for its analysis. <br /> The following conclusions were offered: <br /> • 1) There appears to be a significantly greater difference -between.the_- <br /> • study and control areas for sex crimes than for either property or <br /> violent (other than sexual) crimes. <br /> 2) It is observed that there are about 40% more property crimes and about <br /> the same of rate non-sexual violent crimes per 1,000 persons in the <br /> Study Areas as compared to the Control Areas. <br /> 3) The sex crime rate in the Study Areas was an average of six times <br /> higher than the rate in the Control Area. <br /> 4) Where there is a concentration of adult businesses the difference in <br /> sex offense rates is most significant. Study Area I contained four (4) <br /> adult businesses less than 1;000 feet away frau each other and less <br /> than 500 feet Lou a residential district. Study Areas II and II <br /> each contain a single adult business. In Study Area I there were a <br /> higher number of sex offenses carmitted - 84 more crimes than in Study <br /> Area I_, and 56 more crimes than in Study Area III. <br /> 5) When =pared to the Cental Area, the sex crime rate per 1,000 <br /> residences was over lI times greater in Study Area I.
