Item No:8 C
Meeting Date: April, 11, 2005
Type of Business: Consent Agenda
City Administrator Review: _____

City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Honorable Mayor and City Council
From: Chief of Police, Mike Sommer
Item Title/Subject: Authority to purchase a Radar Speed
Display Trailer
Date of Report: 4-11-05

Background:

The 2005 budget was approved for an expenditure utilizing forfeiture funds for a new
transportable radar speed display trailer to replace our existing transportable radar speed
trailer, (which apparently was purchased used) that has deteriorated to the point where it
no longer functions for any length of time without requiring ongoing repairs. The
transportable speed trailer display units are an effective solution to slow traffic in school
zones, and neighborhood streets. The new model is also capable of recoding statistical
data such as traffic counts and speeds. Four bids were received for a new radar display
unit.

The bid from Decatur Electronics was $7450 for a Galaxy SST, The other bids for similar
products were $13,639 Kustom Smart Model, $13,135 MPH Speed Monitor, and $11,940
Kustom Smart LP.

Recommendation:
Staff seeks council approval to purchase the radar speed trailer from Decatur Electronics
for $7450.

Respectfully submitted,

Mike Sommer
Chief of Police
