May 12, 2005

Dear Mayor:

What do Supreme Court Justice Sandra Day O’Connor, Olympic Gold Medalist Jackie Joyner-
Kersee, writer Gloria Steinem, journalist Katie Couric, and actress Mary Tyler Moore all have in
common?

All of these women got their start in Girl Scouting. In fact, recent alumnae searches have verified what we’ve
known for over 90 years—whether in business, sports, government, science, education, or the arts, Girl
Scouting launches leaders in all fields.

At this time of year, the Girl Scout Council of St. Croix Valley celebrates the achievements of our own
emerging leaders: the recipients of the Girl Scout Gold Award. Despite the prestige and status of this honor,
we find that members of the media and the general public are often unaware of its existence.

It is my pleasure to inform you that a young woman from your community recently earned her Gold Award,
launching her as a leader in her community. (The enclosed roster provides her name.)

The Girl Scout Gold Award is the highest award in Girl Scouting. It is available to Girl Scouts in grades 9 –
12. To achieve it, girls must complete extensive prerequisite activities in the areas of leadership, skill
development, and career exploration. They must also plan and implement a leadership project involving 50
hours of community service over four months. The reach of a Girl Scout Gold Award project is often far,
touching the lives of people in our own community, and also in places as far away as Mexico.

We hope you will recognize the Girl Scout Gold Award recipient in your community by presenting her with a
plaque, mailing a certificate or personal letter, or mentioning her accomplishments at your next city council
meeting. Some cities have chosen to hang a permanent plaque in city hall to commemorate their Girl Scout
Gold Award recipients. Plaques such as these can be updated on an annual basis.

If you are able to provide some recognition for the Girl Scout Gold Award recipient in your community, please
contact Katy Friesz at 651-251-1218 or kfriesz@girlscoutscv.org. The Girl Scout council will then put you in
touch with the recipient and her family.

Thank you for your consideration.

Sincerely,

Lisa Hiebert

Lisa Hiebert
Director of Marketing and Communications

Enclosure
