•
Staff Memo
To: Economic Development Commission Members
From: Cathy Bennett, Economic Development Coordinator
Date: November 10, 1994
Agenda Item: Discussion of Relationship with Business Association
(5d.)
At the October meeting there was significant discussion with regards to the EDC's support
and/or participation with the Mounds View Business Association. It was recommended that
staff research the availability of funds to support the Business Association. The following are
my findings:
College Internship Program - The business association could pursue an intern from numerous
metro business colleges or universities for the administration and marketing of the business
association. The Suburban Chamber frequently hires interns to assist in the development of
i new programs and coordination of current programs. The intern could be responsible for
preparing programs which would run throughout an entire year and coordinate these
programs for the semester in which they receive class credit.
Minnesota Chamber of Commerce - They do not provide funds to start business associations
or chambers of commerce but they will provide professional assistance in developing
programs and strategies for the business association. The Suburban Chamber of Commerce
will also provide professional assistance and may also jointly participate in events and
activities to give the local business association more exposure.
UofM - Business Retention and Development Program - I have put a call into George Morse at
UofM extension services to see if they provide any assistance to local business associations.
The main issue is that the business association needs more active support from the businesses
in Mounds View to be successful. The EDC may want to pass a resolution which supports and
recognizes the value of a local business association to the community. Also, we can continue
to make recommendations for activities which they should actively pursue such as the
evaluation of the U.S. Small Business Administration - Small Business Person of the Year and
providing technical assistance to small emerging businesses in Mounds View.
•
