5. EDC Business: A. Remove Highway 10 Redevelopment Plan Vision and Action Steps from the Table. • Motion/Second: Mountin/Nelson to remove agenda item 5.a. from the table. 7 ayes 0 nays Motion Carried B. Consideration of Highway 10 Redevelopment Plan Vision and Action Steps. Motion/Second: Mountin/Nelson to table agenda item 5.b. and direct staff to distribute figures A-D of the Old Highway 10 Corridor Plan drafted in 1991 to Commission members for review. 7 ayes 0 nays Motion Carried C. Consideration of Resolution No. EDC94-3, Supporting Kinder Care's request for a sign variance. Coordinator Bennett reported that Kinder Care is seeking a variance from the sign ordinance and suggested that the Commission consider a resolution supporting this request. Commissioner Seipp questioned whether it is the Commission's role to make this kind of recommendation since the charge of the Commission is long range planning. The consensus of Commission members was that signage is a business development issue should be address as a whole for all businesses. The sign ordinance needs to be updated with input from the business community on what works with signage. No recommendation was made on this item. D. Consideration of Small Business Person of the Year. Motion/Second: Seipp/Malone that: whereas, the City of Mounds View has been requested to nominate a candidate for U.S. Small Business Administration's 1995 Small Business Person of the Year, the Mounds View Business Association shall be encouraged to establish some means of honoring individual business people so that a qualified candidate can be nominated for 1996. 7 ayes 0 nays Motion Carried 6. Other Business Hotel Proposals: Coordinator Bennett reported that two preliminary proposals for the construction of hotels/conference centers have surfaced. Commission members agreed that there is a need for a hotel/conference center in the area from both the business and resident perspective. Coordinator Bennett was directed to pursue and research both proposals. Report on North Metro Business Retention and Development Program: Coordinator Bennett reported that there are a total of 166 businesses in Mounds View. A total of 79 companies have completed the retention survey. Coordinator Bennett gave a brief overview of some of the findings from the surveys completed and the breakdown of the business community. 7. Reports From Chair and Commissioners: Discussion was held on the next step for the Commission. For the next meeting Coordinator Bennett will evaluate the financial side of the business retention survey, get facts on funds available for business retention projects and more background data on financial needs of Mounds View businesses. 2
