•
Item Numbers: 7A
Meeting Date: January 16, 2009
Type of Business: EDC
City of Mounds View Staff Report
To: Economic Development Commission
From: Heidi Steinmetz, Economic Development Specialist
Item Title/Subject: Potential Mounds View Farmer's Market — Commissioner
Wagner
Background
On January 6, 2008, Commissioner Wagner sent an e-mail to EDC members inquiring if
they had interest in starting a farmer's market in Mounds View. Six of seven EDC
members expressed interest in a farmer's market via e-mail.
• Discussion
Commissioner Wagner may have information to distribute at the EDC meeting about
starting a farmer's market.
Assistant Clerk-Administrator Desaree Crane inquired with the City of Shoreview (see
attachment) about their farmer's market but has not received information yet. Ms.
Crane also inquired with the City Attorney (Kennedy & Graven) about the legalities of a
farmer's market and the attorney's e-mail response is attached.
Recommendation
Since a Farmer's Market is a marketing tool (an event that would draw people to the
area), staff recommends that the EDC wait until Risdall Marketing Group completes
their marketing/communications plan for Mounds View before the EDC considers a
Mounds View farmer's market. The EDC may see other things in the new marketing
plan for the City that are more enticing. It will be important for the EDC to prioritize the
implementation ideas in the plan. This is because there will be limited funding for
implementation due to City budget limitations.
In addition, it is important to note that Clerk-Administrator Jim Ericson has expressed
reservations about a City-run farmer's market due to the amount of staff time and
resources such an endeavor would necessitate.
I
