• MEMO January 16, 1998
To: Economic Development Commission
From: Chuck Whiting, City Administrator
Re: January 29, 1998 EDC Meeting
In the absence of an Economic Development Director, I will do what I can to fill in for the EDC on
January 29. With several projects are going on, a general update and discussion can take place on
any and all, and with your help, I can be given some areas of interest or concern you may have for
the coming year. I have spent a little time talking with Cindy Carlson briefing her on options I have
seen coming for the Council to consider in replacing Cathy Bennett. You may recognize the job
description enclosed in this packet as the one that Cathy started with originally. One significant
change is that the position is now accountable to the Community Development Director. Rick Jopke
is the City's Community Development Director and has come to the City from Roseville where he
had extensive economic development work. Ironically, it is his old position, now retitled and
reworked, that Cathy took with Roseville. With him overseeing the Economic Development
Coordinator, the EDC should expect to see some of him in addition to the Coordinator, and with that,
my hope is a strong collection of economic development emphasis in staff and practice. If all goes
• well, a new Economic Development Coordinator should be selected and possibly on board by the end
of March. I would like the EDC to consider having the chairperson as part of the interview team as
well.
The City Council has also appointed Roger Stigney to be the EDC and hopefully he will be able to
attend that morning. Have a good week and see you all on the 29th.
•
