Mounds View City Council April 14, 2003 Regular Meeting Page 4 answer to a question by stating that he does not know but will find out rather than bluffing his 1 way through an answer. 2 3 Mr. Mielhouse indicated he could not speak to the follow up of Mr. Ericson but would assume 4 that Mr. Ericson is thorough and does what he says he will do based on how he presents himself 5 and the dealings he has had with him as well as seeing the items brought back to Council as 6 requested. 7 8 Mr. Mielhouse indicated he was watching the recent Planning Commission meeting and the 9 matter of the house being constructed in the setback was being discussed and he was very 10 impressed with the honesty and integrity of Mr. Ericson when he admitted the mistake was made 11 and expressed that he did not feel the homeowner should have financial responsibility for an 12 error made by the City. Mr. Mielhouse then said that Mr. Ericson made no excuse for the error 13 that he believes was caused because Mr. Ericson has been asked to “wear too many hats.” 14 15 Mr. Mielhouse told Council he is aware that experience is an important criteria for the position 16 but he feels experience with the City is very important and he would not discount the value of 17 someone with so much knowledge about the City and the way the City runs. He then suggested 18 that Council be very careful when reviewing resumes because a resume is meant to impress the 19 reader but all too often the person who looks good on paper talks a good talk but cannot walk the 20 walk. 21 22 Mr. Mielhouse cautioned Council to carefully consider why a candidate would be leaving another 23 City to come to Mounds View and try to ascertain whether Mounds View would be taking on an 24 employee that has issues in their current position. 25 26 Mr. Mielhouse said that, in his opinion, the City has an excellent candidate in Mr. Ericson who is 27 a known quality to the City and who has shown that he not only talks the talk he can walk the 28 walk. 29 30 Mr. Mielhouse indicated that Mr. Ericson would bring instant stability to the City Administrator 31 position and the City would not have that with an unknown candidate and may not get that from 32 an unknown candidate. He then urged Council Members to consider Mr. Ericson as he feels he is 33 the right candidate for the job. 34 35 6. SPECIAL ORDER OF BUSINESS 36 37 A. Resolution No. 5984, Approving a Step Increase for Mike Schnur 38 39 Interim City Administrator Ericson indicated the step increase is in keeping with the City’s 40 personnel policy and the collective bargaining unit. The department head has made a 41 recommendation that the employee be approved for the increase. 42 43 MOTION/SECOND: Council Member Marty/Council Member Quick. To Approve Resolution 44 5984, a Resolution Approving a Step Increase for Mike Schnur. 45
