2401 County Highway 10
Mounds View, MN 55112
Ramsey County
School Resource Officer

The students have adapted to the new entrances and dusty conditions. The staff is trying to
keep focused and push on to the end of the year. In my position things ended pretty quietly
with a minimum number of thefts and minor scuffles. The end of the school year in June
marked the real beginning of the construction for Edgewood MS.

During the summer months there has been nothing of substance to report other than my
occasional visits in which I found the administration working hard in between the power and
water shutoffs they were preparing for the return of the students.

Upon my return I found a lot of changes, many of the familiar faces had gone, replaced by a
few new ones. With the goal to reduce the total number of man-hours many of the teaching
and para positions were reduced. This has resulted in larger class sizes.

Principle Penny Howard has been rallying the staff to stay positive during what the School
District has so named a bridging year. There is much uncertainty in the building; if the levy
doesn’t pass this fall there is a good chance that a middle school will close.

Which is ironic in that we are just seeing the results of the construction levy. Just in time to
possibly close the school.

Respectfully submitted,

Bob Nelson
School Resource Officer- Edgewood Middle School

Dare / Crime Prevention

The Mounds View Police Department had a busy summer with crime prevention activities.
Officer Bob Nelson attended a school on juvenile alcohol abuse and methods to reduce and
prevent underage drinking. Officer Terry Broos attended property managers meetings to
share information with owners and caretakers of multifamily dwellings and mobile home parks
concerning police calls to the residences under their control. Officer Broos conducted
tobacco compliance checks at 11retail businesses. Of these, only one business sold to the
underage person. Officer Broos helped organize 22 neighbor hood parties for National Night
out. A Mounds View Police Officer visited each party. Some of the parties were also graced
by visits from Council Members and the Mayor. The National Night went well and all the
parties were a great success. Officer Terry Broos served as a counselor at this year’s safety
camp on August 12 and 13th at Hanson Park in New Brighton. The safety camp provided
students with valuable information on how to stay safe in their homes and the community.
Mounds View Police also assisted Tyson trucking with their “Convoy for Cause” on August
21. The convoy involved semis transporting food to stock the local food shelves. On June 19
Officer Terry Broos assisted the Fridley Police Department with security for President Bush's
visit to Micro Control Corporation in Fridley. Officer Broos was fortunate to briefly meet the
President while serving on the inner perimeter security detail for the Presidential visit.
4
