<br />Item No: 11 <br />Meeting Date: July 7, 2003 <br />Type of Business: WK <br />City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Tracy Juell, Public Works Administrative Assistant <br />Item Title/Subject: Limited Days for Garbage and Recycling Pickups <br /> <br />Introduction: <br />During the May 12, 2003 Council meeting, discussion occurred regarding the possibility <br />of limiting residential/multi-family garbage/recycling pickups to 1 or 2 days a week within <br />the City. Staff was instructed to survey the garbage/recycling haulers for their opinion and <br />preference. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />As per the attached responses from the haulers, this is the summary. <br /> <br />Hauler 7am Start <br />Time <br />1 Day Preferred 2Days Preferred Comments <br />Ace Yes Thursday Thursday Just Fine <br />BFI Yes Thursday Thursday/Friday Would prefer to <br />keep open <br />hauling for <br />routing issues. <br />Larry’s Quality <br />Sanitation <br />NO Wednesday Wednesday See attached <br />form with his <br />comments. <br />Walters Yes Can’t do Monday/Thursday Picks up <br />apartment <br />buildings and <br />businesses and <br />they require at <br />least 3 days. <br />He will work <br />with us though <br />if needed to <br />limit it 2 days. <br />Waste Mgmt Yes Monday Monday/Wednesday Keep with the 1 <br />day a week <br />pickup if <br />possible. <br /> <br />Recommendation: Given that the City of Mounds View possesses an open hauling <br />system, it may be difficult to streamline all of the haulers to the same 1 or 2 days per <br />week; they need to do what is economically correct for their business and customers. <br />Staff is seeking Council’s direction with this issue. (Note: Staff is waiting for a response <br />from R.W. Beck, Inc., Consultant, regarding the assistance level in preparing a RFP for <br />contract recycling within the City.)
