Item No. 6B <br />Type of Business: CA <br />WK: Work Session; PH: Public Hearing; <br />CA: Consent Agenda; CB: Council Business City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council <br />From: Greg Lee, Director of Public Works <br />Item Title/Subject: Resolution No. 5868 Approving a Contract Award <br />for Weather Service for the 2002 – 2003 Winter <br />Season <br /> <br />Meeting Date: October 28, 2002 <br /> <br />Background: <br />Annually, the City budgets for funds to provide weather service, which assists the <br />City in making decisions pertaining to weather related activities. Specifically, this <br />pertains to activities related to snow plowing and removal activities. <br /> <br />Discussion: <br />Having winter storm information is critical for proper maintenance of city streets. <br />Since 1996, the City has contracted with Great Lakes Weather Services to <br />provide the City with weather related services to assist the Public Works <br />Department in making decisions as to how to best maintain the drivability of City <br />streets during and following a snow or ice event. These decisions include: the <br />appropriate maintenance strategy to apply, the proper equipment to deploy, and <br />when to deploy it. <br /> <br />Two companies that provide the necessary weather service were contacted to <br />receive bids for the aforementioned service. Details on service and fees follow: <br /> <br />Great Lakes Weather Services - $502 (if submitted by November 1st) for the 2002 <br />– 2003 winter season <br /> <br />Meteorlogix - $89/month for a minimum of 36 months - $3204 contract amount <br /> <br />Great Lakes Weather Service contract begins with the first storm of the year and <br />terminates with the last. Meteorlogix is a three-year minimum contract. Great <br />Lakes provides warnings in the form of a telephone call two hours prior to a <br />storm event. Meteorlogix provides up-to-date satellite images sent via computer. <br />Meteorlogix also provides many other year-round weather data parameters such <br />as wind direction and speed (possibly useful for summer pesticide applications). <br /> <br />As previously mentioned, the City has used Great Lakes Weather Service since <br />1996 with great satisfaction.
