Item No.6A Type of Business:CA <br />WK: Work Session; PH: Public Hearing; <br />CA: Consent Agenda; CB: Council Business City of Mounds View Staff Report <br />To: Honorable Mayor and City Council From: Givonna Reed, Assistant to the City Administrator <br />Item Title/Subject: Resolution 5560 Hiring Jim Atkinson for the Planning <br />Associate Position <br />Date of Report: May 7, 2001 <br /> <br />In November 2000 Jim Ericson was appointed to the position of Community Development Director <br />which left the Planner position open. Council gave direction to evaluate the needs of the <br />department and fill the position accordingly. <br /> <br />In March I advertised for the Planning Associate position and received approximately 25 <br />applications. We interviewed five candidates (the sixth candidate excepted a job elsewhere prior to <br />the interviews being scheduled) and are recommending that the Council hire Jim Atkinson for the <br />Planning Associate position. <br /> <br />Mr. Atkinson is currently employed as a City Planner with the Town of Collierville, a suburb of <br />Memphis, Tennessee and is a native Minnesotan. Mr. Atkinson holds a BA in Geography and a <br />MA in City and Regional Planning, both from the University of Memphis. He has also served as the <br />Planning Assistant to the Memphis and Shelby County Division of Planning and Development and <br />a Research Assistant with the Regional Economic Development Center. He has experience with <br />report writing, making presentations, drafting ordinances and communicating with residents, <br />business owners, and developers regarding land use issues. <br /> <br />The Community Development Director and I are confident that Mr. Atkinson would be an asset to <br />the City and we are recommending that the Council hire Mr. Atkinson for the position with a starting <br />salary of $3102.50 monthly (step 2) and a start date of June 4, 2001. The City’s six month <br />probationary period would apply and Mr. Atkinson would move to Step 3 after one year of <br />satisfactory service as the Planning Associate. All other personnel policies would apply normally. <br /> <br />RECOMMENDATION <br /> <br />Approve Resolution 5560 Hiring Jim Atkinson for the Planning Associate Position. <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br /> <br />
