VR2008-002 Consideration of a Variance to allow for additional Wall Signage at Totino’s at Mounds View Square, 2535 County Highway 10 Planning Associate Heller reported the applicant, Totino’s Restaurant, represented by Mark Elwell, has requested a variance to allow for an increased amount of wall signage on their building located at Mounds View Square, 2535 County Highway 10. She explained Totino’s is a new business in Mounds View and under city code they are allowed 100 square feet of signage on the building. The proposed signage for above the door is 89 square feet. The applicant is requesting an additional 40 square feet for signage on the south wall of the building. Recently, the Planning Commission approved a variance for another business with a similar situation. The hardship circumstance is because the building is sitting on a corner. The way the building is orientated, it would be difficult for traffic going northbound on Highway 10 to see their main sign above the front door. The building was built many years ago and has good visibility on all four sides. The additional 40 feet of signage would push the total to 129 square feet of signage. Planning Associate Heller indicated notices were mailed to all property owners within 350 feet with no comments as of today. She stated that Mark Elwell, Totino’s is present for any questions from the commission. Chair Stevenson opened the public hearing at 7:04 p.m. There being no public input, Chair Stevenson closed the public hearing at 7:05 p.m. Commissioner Miller questioned the additional 40 square foot sign on the south wall. Planning Associate Heller indicated that Totino’s would be 29 square feet over the allowed amount. Commissioner Gunn suggested the resolution reading a second sign of 40 square feet. Commissioner Walsh-Kaczmarek suggested amending the third paragraph by adding “current amount of signage is 89 square feet.” MOTION/SECOND: Commissioner Walsh-Kaczmarek/Commissioner Gunn. To approve Resolution 884-08, a Resolution Recommending Approval of a Variance for an additional 29 Feet for a Total of 129 Square Feet of Exterior Wall Signage for Totino’s at Mounds View Square, 2535 County Highway 10; Planning Case No. VR2008-002.
