M E M O R A N D U MM E M O R A N D U MM E M O R A N D U MM E M O R A N D U M TO: PARKS AND RECREATION AND FORESTRY COMMISSIONERS FROM: NICK DEBAR | PUBLIC WORKS DIRECTOR DATE: MARCH 25, 2010 RE: BBC CONTRIBUTION UPDATE The Bethlehem Baptist Church (BBC) purchased the building located at 5151 Program Avenue in 2004 and received City zoning approval to renovate the former office / warehouse space for church usage. At the same time, the Church expressed its desire to sponsor and support worthy community endeavors and created the Mounds View Service Project Fund pledging annual donations totaling $25,000. They envisioned the fund to be used to help meet certain community needs jointly identified by the city and the Church that would be “in harmony” with their mission and values. The Commission discussed suggestions for consideration of BBC donation funds at their January 28, 2010 meeting. Representatives from the City, the Community Center and the PRF Commission met with representatives from BBC on February 17, 2010 to discuss potential funding opportunities for the first half 2010 service project fund donation which totaled $16,892. A number of programs and improvements were highlighted for Bethlehem’s consideration. Subsequent to the meeting, staff put together various cost estimates associated with the projects and programs discussed, forwarding this information to the Church on February 22, 2010. The Church responded with a letter dated March 4, 2010, recommending the following disbursement schedule: • $6000 YMCA's Club Mid program • $2000 Laptops for Homework Help (Community Center) • $6000 Ice Rink Improvements at Hillview Park • $2892 Trailway amenities, benches, park sign landscaping, etc. On March 22, 2010, the City Council adopted Resolution 7600 accepting the donation from Bethlehem Baptist Church.
