Park Maintenance Projects – Steve Dazenski
1. Groveland playground and volleyball court border timbers removed because of
the condition they were in. Safety precaution. They will eventually be replaced
with reverse curbing similar to our other playgrounds. It should be considered to
omit the volleyball court at this time and perhaps select another more desirable
spot for it other than right in front of the entrance.
2. Vandalism removal. Lambert, Hillview and Groveland.
3. Oakwood/Greenfield trail maintenance, culvert dug out and repaired, rip rap
installed.
4. Downed and leaning tree removal, this was due to high winds.
5. Landscape bushes trimmed at several buildings.
6. Irrigation repairs.
7. Litter pick- up various parks. Silver View and Greenfield have been noticeably
better!
8. Weed control, pulling, cutting and spraying.
9. Wood chipping every tree in every park.
10. Athletic field maintenance consisting of dragging, cutting and painting also
game preps.
11. Hillview drinking fountain drain, vent and plumbing completed.
12. Re-chipping playgrounds with 200 yds. Of special chips this equates to 2 semi
truck loads.
13. Fertilizing of all irrigated turf.
14. Working with contractors at MVCC, some roof related and mostly HVAC related.
Upcoming suggested projects
1. Bridge removal at Greenfield. This bridge has been vandalized by partial
destruction and burning many times. It is no longer safe.
2. Trim painting at Random park shelter.
3. Replace wood sheeting on Silver View park shelter with a maintenance free
product.
4. Fire pit removal from City Hall Park. This pit is in rough condition, is rarely used
and when the Safety Committee did a park inspection our Fire Marshal thought it
should be removed because there was not a source of water to extinguish it.
*Just an F.Y.I. the playgrounds that have sand in them attract sand wasps every
year. The playgrounds with chips do not have this problem. I was watching the
morning news several weeks ago and it was mentioned that the City of
Minneapolis closed three of their parks because of sand wasps. They choose not
to spray and tried other “natural deterrents” that did not work. We still have sand
at City Hall, Lambert, half of Silver View, Groveland and Random. Each of the
above named parks with the exception of Groveland has had numerous wasps
and has been treated with chemicals that are safe to humans and pets when dry.
Groveland is well shaded and the others are not and that leads me to suspect
they prefer the hot sunny areas over the shaded ones.
