New Brighton Eagles Post #3718
563 8th Avenue NW
New Brighton, MN 55112
Dear New Brighton Eagles:
Mounds View Athletic Association
January 23, 1990
Cc/5
For 33 years, the Mounds View Athletic Association (MVAA)
has provided boys and girls with the chance to play and enjoy
America's greatest pastime, baseball. It has been a strong
league because parent volunteers follow original league by-laws
written in 1957, which state every registrant be given a chance
to play.
Today we're asking for the support of the Eagles to assist
the MVAA and the City of Mounds View in making badly needed
improvements to a baseball diamond used by the league. In a
moment, I'll explain the plan. But first, you should know what
the league is all about.
The MVAA is a recreation league for over 500 youngsters from
Mounds View, New Brighton, Arden Hills, Shoreview, St. Anthony,
and Fridley. Championship teams are honored for both regular
season and playoff excellence. The league provides umpiring
opportunities for anyone over age 13. The MVAA also sponsors two
travel teams in the North Star League.
With a growing emphasis on recreation sports, finding enough
suitable fields for practices and games has become very diffi-
cult. The demands on city parks are very high.
The City of Mounds View has agreed to work with the MVAA on
making improvements to the baseball field at Greenfield Park, at
Knoll Drive and Hillview Road. Greenfield Park is a perfect set-
ting for youth baseball. But the field needs to be upgraded.
The infield turf makes almost every ground ball unplayable,
if not a danger. The infield and base paths are too long for
younger players and the distances to the fences are too short for
older players.
The city estimates improvements will run about $62,000.
With the improvements field dimensions would be brought in line
with other North Suburban fields; dugouts would be erected; and a
sprinkler system would be installed to ensure the field stays in
excellent playing condition. In short, a lot of work needs to be
done.
The City Council has designated $14,000 towards the project,
on condition the work be done in 1990. The MVAA is contributing
$2,500. We are asking for your help to raise the balance.
