GIVING YOUR TIME Volunteering time and knowledge can be a special kind of gift which benefits everyone. It is a people -helping -people opportunity. Youth activities, conserva- tion programs and cultural improve- ments are all available to the volunteer. A Park District volunteer will meet new and interesting people and gain experi- ence, leadership and organizational skills. Volunteer assistance is needed at various events and at many park loca- tions, as follows: at Sinnissippi Greenhouse at Trailside Centre at Searls Prairie with swimming meets with Camp Sunshine with golf tournaments with the youth soccer program with the Juvenile Work -Release Program at Concord Recreation Center with music shell concessions with Friday night Rec Center programs at Sinnissippi Gardens or in any of the parks of the Rockford Park District General clerical work, reception duties, registration responsibilities, photogra- phic projects, and the sharing and teach- ing of nature education are also oppor- tunities In the area of volunteerism. Call the Administrative Office to set up that special volunteer project, a project which will fit your donated time and/or talent. Everyone benefits from a completed vol- unteer project. METHODS OF GIVING Cash contributions are fully deductible up to 50% of an adjusted gross income. If the gift is larger than the allowed per- centage of gross income for the year, one may carry over the balance for the five succeeding years, subject to the allow- able deduction in each of those years. Appreciated property (long-term capi- tal gain) is deductible at its fair market value at the time of gift. Certain I.R.S. rules must be followed, however, for gifts of property. Reserved Life Estate — People who wish to donate land in order to insure that it will be preserved for future gen- erations may retain immediate posses- sion. Even though the land is given to the Park District, people may, under certain I.R.S. rules, use part of the property for their lifetime. They can, however, take an immediate charitable deduction with carryover options. This type of giving is practical and desirable in many cases. Life Income Gifts — In the giving process, certain trust documents can be of benefit to a donor. Income, gifts and distribution are all indicated in the trust document which can generate substan- tial tax and financial benefits for both the individual and the Park District. Life Insurance — If the need for life in- surance is now gone, the policy can be a gift to the Park District. Instructions and a signature are all that is required to make the District the owner and the beneficiary. The previous owner, of course, claims the policy value as the charitable deduction. . Gifts By Will — Cash, securities, per- sonal property, real estate or life insur- ance can be given as a bequest. If this is your wish, please seek counsel with your attorney.
