Thirty-seven percent were interested in a community -wide trail
system. This result is consistent with the number of people who
saw a personal benefit to themselves; support is concentrated in
an intense minority of residents. And, twenty-five percent were
very likely to use a community fitness center. The -City may wish
to consider the feasibility of these facilities, particularly the
nature center or wildlife preserve.
When asked about improvements or additions to the park
system, residents ranked three items as very important. Police
surveillance of the parks was cited by forty-five percent of the
respondents. z An improved or expanded trail system was mentioned
by thirty-four percent. And, park supervision was deemed very
important by thirty percent. Safety concerns dominated this
ranking. The City may wish to consider how to address the
uneasiness which apparently lies below these rankings.
.The closing of the Edgewood Community Center greatly alters
the The
and facilities mix that was available to Mounds View
residents. :Only two percent -of the households, however, reported
participants in senior citizens programs there. But, twenty
percent of the residents feel that daycare and latchkey needs are
not being met by providers in the City; the closing will only
aggravate this situation further. There would appear to be a
-unique need for a substitute facility in light of the closing.
While some residents, nineteen percent, belong to a private
health club, most residents are dependent upon public facilities..
These .residents would be well served by'a community -center. In
.fact, when queried about the types of facilities and programming
they would like in a local community center, strong -preferences
were discovered: fifteen percent,. a unusually large percent,
want -an -indoor swimming pool; eleven percent desire a senior
center; .nine .percent mentioned a gymnasium and fitness center.;
while .seven _ percent hope fora daycare and preschool program—,
-Continuing'--education classes were also popular. The sentiments
may_ -be best summarized by the Mounds View residents who want a
local community center "just like Edgewood!"
When read a list of potential facilities for inclusion,
citizens exhibited definite priorities. Ninety-one percent
supported the inclusion of a gymnasium. High eighty percent
support scores were generated for a senior citizens center, a
teen center, and arts and crafts rooms. Eighty-one percent
supported a large community room for rental purposes. Seventy-
seven percent favored small group meeting rooms, while one
percent less like a nursery school -day care area. Only a sauna
and whirlpool bath drew marginal ratings: fifty-one percent
supported it, while forty-three percent opposed it. The
Community Center, then, should provide places to meet and places
to recreate.
Support for a community center in Mounds View was a strong
majority of eighty-two percent; only nine percent opposed the
concept. But, even more compelling is the support for a
6
