MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCIL
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR
PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: APRIL 11, 1990
SUBJECT: DEPARTMENT QUARTERLY REPORT
There continues to be a cry for after-school programs, especially from two working
parents or single parent families who need a supervised program for children during
after-school hours. The Mounds View Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department
attempts to meet the need with the provision of the after-school programs at
Pinewood and Sunnyside Elementary Schools. The program of activities are shown on
the following page.
Except for 1st - 3rd grade basketball at Sunnyside, the program registrations barely
meet minimum numbers. The participation is much higher at Sunnyside School than
Pinewood School for reasons unknown. Only two of the eight activities offered at
Pinewood had sufficient interest, while all of Sunnyside activities had sufficient
numbers to be held.
These after-school programs had a great amount of publicity. Flyers were distributed
to each student, the information was published in the city Newsletter which reaches
every resident in Mounds View, and the New Brighton Bulletin and Focus Newspapers
ran articles advertising the programs.
The Mounds View Parks, Recreation and Forestry Department will continue to offer
after-school programs and through trial and error and with continual evaluations, will
find the activity program which meets the desires of the community.
MS/SL
Attachment
