Park Notes
A newsletter of the Friends of St. Paul and Ramsey County Parks
1621 Beechwood Avenue, St. Paul, Minnesota 55116 698-4543
Volume 4 Number 2 May, 1990
Friends of St. Paul and Ramsey County Parks
Annual Meeting
Tuesday, June 12,1990
6:00 PM at Lake Phalen Pavilion
Picnic Lunch $7:00
Walk part of the Burlington Northern Corridor Following the meeting.
Join the Friends, bring a friend, or meet a new Friend at the 3rd annual meeting of the Friends of St. Paul and Ramsey County Parks.
After a picnic supper and a short business meeting, walkers are invited to explore a portion of the abandoned railroad corridor.
The corridor promises to provide one of the most important links for the city and county trail system. The Friends have actively
promoted acquisition and development of this key trail link.
To order a box supper, send you check to 1621 Beechwood Ave. by June 5. For additional information call 698-4543.
Designs in Grass
Grass, crown vetch and a few shrubs are about all most of us are likely to see as we drive
down most Minnesota freeways. But it doesn't have to be that way. One new program seeks
to plant native wild flowers and plants. The Friends, inspired by board member David Lilly,
is working on yet another alternative.
Working with native shrubs and grasses, the landscape architectural firm of Oehme, Van
Sweden and Associates is developing a landscape design for the steep slope below the
Cathedral adjacent to 35E. Lilly was impressed with the work of the firm on various
University of Minnesota projects and saw the 35E steep slope as a way of introducing
thousands of Minnesota commuters to the possibilities that exist when landscaping in hard -
to -hold areas. There are several goals: hold the slope to prevent erosion, provide year round
beauty, and stimulate others with steep slopes to explore creative solutions to challenging
landscape problems.
Lilly is raising the funds for the architectural firm's design, the Minnesota Department of
Transportation will do the planting and the City of St. Paul will provide maintenance.
Planting should be completed this spring.
A book on the subject of landscaping with grasses which will help direct those who are
inspired by the 35E design is n' Design F)JnCdons and
Effects: Thomas A. Reinhardt, Martina Reinhardt and Mark Moskowitz.
