1997 HIGHLIGHTS
* Staff prepared and submitted incorporation applications for both the Festival and
Mounds View Community Theater providing these groups with new incorporation
and independence. While the City of Mounds View will continue to assist these
groups with facilities and equipment, the activities of these groups will be supervised
by the Boards of Directors and implemented by various volunteer committees.
Staff prepared and submitted a Children's Initiative Grant application which was
awarded to the City in the amount of $356,250 which will be used in the
construction of youth recreation areas of the Community Center.
The Community Center Task Force met approximately three times to review
Community Center plans and provide community input.
Summer Intern completed an extensive in-house recreation program survey and
evaluation process gaining insight into resident's recreation needs and wants,
reasons why residents do not use city services, and overall evaluation and
suggestions from residents for improvements to recreation services. This
information assists staff in future programming.
* The old playground equipment at Groveland Park was removed and new
playground equipment was installed. Various equipment that was still in good
shape will be incorporated into the new playground color scheme. New landscaping
will be solicited as a 1998 Eagle Scout project.
" Community Gardens were established at Woodcrest Park with over 20 people
participating in this new program. Year-end evaluations provide ideas for next year
improvements. Participants were excited about the coming years opportunities.
* The Department participated in a school district -wide athletic facility analysis. This
project was a partnership with other cities, school district and athletic associations.
The results of the analysis with recommendation for future plans was presented to
Mayors and Managers.
* The Cable TV Commission granted the City of Mounds View funding for new
equipment to upgrade the Cable TV system. New equipment has been purchased
and installation of new equipment continues.
* An alarm security system was installed at Silver View Park picnic shelter to ward off
vandalism including grafitti.
* Goals set for 1997 have been accomplished (see goal descriptions, next page).
