interoffice
M E M O R A N D U M
to: Parks and Recreation Commission
from: Mary Saarion
subject: Disc Golf Course at Silver View Park
date: May 19, 1998
A few of the disc golf baskets located in the upland forest area of Silver View Park have either
been stolen or vandalized. The location of these baskets probably was not the best because the
area often is wet. Also, the area is hidden and thus the vandalism. If you recall, the MN Disc
Golf Association planned and installed the Disc Golf Course. They advertised the nine hole
course each year. Because of the missing holes and vandalised units, the course is no longer a
legitimate 9 hole course. The MN Disc Golf Course membership has called to ask whether or not
the City will be re -installing the units or not. The cost of each unit is approximately $500.
Installation and upkeep are also required. In addition, new placement of approximately 4 holes
would be necessary for a nine hole course. The tricky part comes in the design of the course.
Because there are so many active areas of the park and intertwining paths and parking, there are
liability concerns. It is important that the path of the disc throw does not come in the path or hit
another park user.
Another phone call was received by a group in Plymouth who are re -constructing a disc golf
course. They are looking for disc golf baskets and wanted to know whether or not the City of
Mounds View would want to sell the ones at Silver View.
I know that there are people that use the disc golf course at Silver View. I do not know the
frequency nor the numbers of users. The space available for adding 4 more holes to Silver View
Park is limited. However, a disc golf participant, Ken Soles, has offered to prepare a disc golf
course plan for your recommendation. He has no special skills nor planning expertise, only the
love of the game and experience on many disc golf courses.
I would like to hear the Commissioner's ideas about the Disc Golf Course at Silver View so that I
can reply back to these people.
