School Resource Officer (SRO) Edgewood: <br />The SRO duties at Edgewood Middle School were handled by Officer Kirk Leitch for the <br />months of school in 2019. Officer Melissa Miller took over duties at Edgewood in <br />August of 2020. <br />As a review, the following duties are typically carried out by the SRO on a daily basis at <br />Edgewood Middle School: <br />• Assisting with traffic flow in front of the school <br />■ Ensuring the school is secured each morning <br />• Providing a police presence in the hallways during passing times and in the <br />cafeteria during lunch times <br />■ Investigating crimes that occur on school property <br />■ Assisting patrol by performing follow-up on cases that involve students or school <br />property <br />■ Assisting with lock down, fire, and severe weather drills <br />■ Serving as a member of the school crisis team <br />Providing police support to school dances and after school activities <br />• Assisting at Pinewood Elementary/The Bridges/ALC as needed <br />• Being a liaison between the school and the police department <br />• Forming positive relationships with students <br />■ Maintaining the school radio communications system <br />• Deescalating out of control students <br />• Communicating with juvenile probation officers <br />• Operation of the school surveillance system <br />• Locating truant/missing students <br />• Locating and recovering stolen bikes, electronics and other property <br />Changes started early in 2019 at Edgewood Middle School with the ground breaking for <br />the new construction to expand the school and update facilities. This year also marked <br />the retirement of long time Principal Penny Howard and the beginning of new leadership <br />at Edgewood under Principal Rob Reetz. The students have been responding well to the <br />changes and are eager and excited for the year ahead. All of the students and staff at <br />Edgewood continue working hard to meet their educational goals. <br />The school continued to take a proactive approach throughout 2019 to keep incidents <br />requiring law enforcement intervention to a minimum. This year Edgewood hired a new <br />Dean and Staff members to further monitor and assist with student issues. Edgewood <br />now has two Student Intervention Specialists (SIS) that go into classrooms to work with <br />the Students and Teachers. This year there were two reported assaults and one disorderly <br />conduct incident. Other reports included lost cell phones, some theft incidents, and social <br />media issues. The cell phones were immediately recovered, property in the theft <br />incidents were located and returned, and the social media issues were resolved with the <br />
