1/1 MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR fAS
PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: JULY 12, 1989
SUBJECT: .PARK FUNDING ALTERNATIVES
Councilmember Quick called this week to request that staff and council
discuss possible ways to finance park improvements in the future. I have
given a little thought to this subject and have come upon six possibilities:
1. Increase fees for park users - softball leagues, picnic reservations,
youth athletics, association athletics for special projects.
2. Park Foundations - such as Groveland Park Foundation; residents
raising money for purchase of neighborhood park amenities.
✓ 3. Grants for state and federal monies.
4. City organization donations, i.e. Lion's Club.
5. Profits from sales - candy, pop, t-shirts, pins, etc.
6. Profits from special events such as community carnivals, city-wide
dances, etc.
7. Memorials - lnWr !don of a program to accept mernoriais.
There are pros and cons to all of these suggestions. Unfortunately, all
except number] 1, 4 and 7 are very time consuming to organize and
implement. I am sure that your discussion will provide many more ideas
which can be pursued!
I will be on vacation the week of July 17 and therefore am unable to
attend the agenda meeting.
