Position Title: <br />Department: <br />Accountable to: <br />Status: <br />CITY OF MOUNDS VIEW <br />POSITION DESCRIPTION <br />Sports Official <br />Parks and Recreation <br />Public Works/Parks and Recreation Director <br />Seasonal Temporary <br />PRIMARY OBJECTIVE OF POSITON <br />Under the guidance and supervision of the Parks and Recreation Superintendent, this position is <br />responsible to officiate at competitive athletic or sporting events, detect infractions of rules and <br />decide penalties according to established regulations of the sporting event. <br />SUPERVISION RECEIVED <br />Works under the general guidance and direction of the Parks and Recreation Superintendent. <br />SUPERVISION EXERCISED <br />None. <br />ESSENTIAL DUTIES AND RESPONSIBILITIES <br />• Officiate sporting events to maintain standards of play and to ensure game rules are <br />observed. <br />• Make participates aware of sporting event infractions. <br />• Inspect sporting equipment and/or examine participants in order to ensure compliance with <br />event and safety regulations. <br />• Keep track of event times when necessary. <br />• Judge performances in sporting in order to award points, impose scoring penalties, and <br />determine results. <br />• Resolve claims of rule infractions or complaints by participants and assess any necessary <br />penalties, according to regulations. <br />• Confer with other sport officials, coaches, players and/or Parks and Recreation <br />Superintendent in order to provide information, originate activities, and discuss problems. <br />• Compile scores and other athletic records. <br />• Report complaints made, actions taken or needed. <br />• If necessary explain rules and regulations governing the specific sport. <br />MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS <br />• Must be at least 16 years of age and have played or have knowledge of sport. <br />• Have the desire to work with the public. <br />• Be available to work a part-time schedule of 10 — 20 hours per week, which include: <br />o Weekdays 4:00 — 8:00 p.m. <br />o Weekends and school breaks noon — 8:00 p.m. <br />o Summer 9:00 a.m. — 2:00 p.m. <br />NECESSARY KNOWLEDGE, SKILLS, AND ABILITIES <br />• Thorough knowledge of rules and methods of play for the event or game to which assigned. <br />• Ability to exercise fair and impartial judgement and render decisions quickly. <br />® Ability to maintain order and secure respect of game participants. <br />• Ability to score and time various sporting events. <br />• Ability to keep records and make reports. <br />• Integrity, honesty and sound judgement required for the position. <br />• Must be tactful and courteous to players and onlookers. <br />
