Minneapolis, MN <br />• As part of the 2005 federal transportation funding bill, Minneapolis <br />and the surrounding area received $24 million to participate in the <br />Non -motorized Transportation Pilot Program to fund local bicycle and <br />pedestrian investments. <br />• While cycling rates have increased, the number of bicycle involved <br />crashes has stayed the roughly the same since 1993, resulting in a <br />decreased crash rate. <br />• Extensive investment in bicycle networks, in particular, the off street <br />path system. <br />• 4.1% of commuters bike to work, six times the national average of <br />0.6%. <br />• In some neighborhoods, over 12% of commuters bike to work. <br />Portland, OR <br />• Bicycle ridership rates have tripled since 2001. <br />• While cycling rates have increased, the number of bicycle involved <br />crashes has stayed the same since 1995, resulting in a decreased crash <br />rate. <br />• Extensive investment in bicycle networks, including bike boulevards <br />and on -street bike lanes. <br />• The country's first bike/pedestrian/transit only bridge - no cars, Tilikum <br />Crossing, which opened in September 2015. <br />• 6% of commuters bike to work, about 10 times the national average. <br />• In some neighborhoods, over 20% of commuters bike to work. <br />1-9 I CONTEXT & VISION <br />
