411,
MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks and Recreation Commissoners
FROM: Bruce K. Anderson , Director
Parks, Recreation and Forestry
DATE: September 22, 1981
RE: Athletic Update
This subject reminds staff of the old jokes which start out "I 've got good
news and bad news . . . . " First , the bad news - I have included a memo
with fairly extensive support correspondance relating to a lawsuit currently
pending with Mr. Gary De Gross and staff regarding a state softball tournament
berth. The memo is fairly self-explanatory and staff will be providing additional
background information at Thursday's meeting.
On the brighter side, staff has been working closely with Arden Hills , New Brighton ,
• Shoreview, and School District #621 in the development of an athletic consortium.
As can be noted, we held our first meeting on August 18 and there were nine sports
represented which was a very successful beginning. We have scheduled a second session
for the second week in November. Our second session theme will be a youth sports
medicine clinic which should prove to be beneficial for each association.
At this time our goals are to open up the communiciation lines between the different
associations so that we can begin to discuss common problems and basic philosophy
of youth sports programming.
Eventually we plan to expand into such diverse areas as:
1. Program structure
2. Joint coaches clinic
3. Facility usage (both indoors and outdoors)
4. Fund raising
5. Idea exchange, registration, flyer preparation , etc.
6. Joint workshop on first aid , philosophy, leadership skills , etc.
111
To our knowledge, this is one of the first major efforts to bring all of the athletic
associations together for common discussion and fellowship.
