De Gross vs Mounds View Lawsuit
Page 2
Mr. Blackstone never did become involved with the program as he moved out of '
the City. Mr. De Gross then registered his team on April 23, 1981 as a Senior
Girls team. It is at this time when we discussed the season, i .e. coaching conduct,
player eligibility, state tournaments , etc.
Prior to the season commencing , I met with two parents from Mr. De Gross ' team
who expressed their concerns over his coaching techniques, the team players ages ,
and an upcoming tournament. So, Prior to even beginning problems were developing.
The league finally got off the ground following a shaky start, lots of rain-outs ,
last minute team changes , field problems , etc. The Senior Girls season drew to
a close with a double elimination playoff tournament on July 19 , 1981. When the
season concluded, Mr. De Gross called about the playoffs and I indicated that his
team was scheduled to play in the Sr. Girls league playoffs (which they did) and
the league champion would advanced on to the State Tournament. He lost the •
double elimination tournament to Steve's Paynes (who went on to win the State
Senior Girls Tournament) on July 19 , 1981. This conversation was once again
followed up with correspondence dated July 17, 1981.
On July 24, 1981 I met with two parents of the "Flyers" softball team at which time
I indicated, once again , that their team was registered as a Sr. Girls team and
since they had not won the playoffs , they were not eligible for the State Tournament.
I further tried to help them to gain entrance to a tournament should a vacancy occur
(see letter dated 7/24/81) .
Mr. De Gross continued to "bad mouth" myself and the department following his return
from the State Tournament (which they did not play in) so I sent a sixth letter
dated 7/27/81 outlining the status of his team. As you' re aware, he responded with
a letter to the editor promising a lawsuit.
I received word two weeks ago that September 30, 1981 has been set at Ramsey County
Conciliation Court. After speaking with Attorney Meyers , Mark Karney will be •
representing myself and the City on the September 30, 1981 date.
