MEMO TO: PARKS AND RECREATION COMMISSIONERS O
FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR
DATE: APRIL 19 , 1995
SUBJECT: PARK CAN RECYCLING
Cub Scout Pack 167 has requested the permission to collect
aluminum cans from park trash containers. Staff meet with the
leader of the pack and informed them of our experiences trying to
recycle cans at parks. Our experience has been that the aluminum
can trash containers are contaminated because other trash is put
in them. Recyclers ask that a bag is 92% pure.
Another concern is the safety of the collectors. Not knowing
what is in the container is a hazard. All park trash receptacles
attract bees, and they alone are a safety hazard to our park
employees as well as anyone else who removes the trash.
We have received information from both Ramsey County and the
League of Cities Risk Management Service who both encourage the
City of Mounds View to be careful with this endeavor.
I have offered Cub Scout Pack all the clean cans at City Hall,
the Maintenance Building and the Golf Course. These cans we know
are 100% clean and pure. Even with the concerns stated, the Cub
Scout Pack continues to be interested in collecting aluminum cans
from park containers.
The City Recycling Programmer, Laurie will administer the project
from here and require the necessary safety factors to ensure that
everyone is protected.
