MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks and Recreation Commission
4111 FROM: Staff
DATE: January 25 , 1984
•
RE: Wellness Program Update
Unfortunately, due to a time committment, Ms. Linder will not be
able to attend Thursday' s meeting , but she has re-arranged her
schedule to make the February 23 Park Commission meeting . At-
tached is a flyer that was distributed through local businesses
throughout the Mounds View/New Brighton area which list each of
the wellness program classes that were offered during the winter
session . Of the ten program classes that were offered , we had a
50% success ratio. Although this is not extremely good, we feel
it is fairly positive and indicative of what the potential in
programming for wellness offerings could be .
One of the items that is most important in reviewing the well-
ness/healthy lifestyle program offerings is that it is not
staff ' s position that the ten lifestyle classes that are offered
be thought of as the entire healthy lifestyle program. It is
More of a concept or image change that our department is attempt-
ing to portray to the public; that through participation in
recreational activities you will hopefully develop a healthy
lifestyle .
• We have expanded the t e point system for our healthy lifestyle pro-
gram to include all of our recreational program offerings so that
people who participate in softball leagues, aerobics classes ,
swimming classes and other recreational offerings will earn heal-
thy lifestyle points which may qualify them for a t-shirt. We
feel that by encouraging an active and healthy lifestyle , we will
better serve our residents through a total involvement of both
their mind and body.
We are currently involved in putting together a half-day wellness
seminar for our community leaders and City employees on February
16 , 1984 at the Edgewood Community Center and hope to make that a
kick-off to better inform the community and the employees as to
what the healthy lifestyle programs are all about. Staff will be
providing additional background information on the wellness pro-
gram offerings at Thursday' s Park Commission meeting.
BKA/sll
1111
