IlIII MEMO TO: Mound ie\ !arks and Recreation Commission
FROM: Bruce4 , IL - . -rson, Director
Parks,Y eation and Forestry
DATE : August 0 , 1983
RE: Monthly Update
The following items are programs and/or activities that took
place during the last month in our department . The items
do not need official commission action but will provide you
with an overview of activities that have evolved within our
department.
1 . 1983 Mid-season Forestry Report - Enclosed is a copy of
the mid-season forestry report from City Forester Rick
Wriskey . Highlights of the report are basically that our
diseased tree program appears to be working as we are down
30% in diseased tree incidents from thespring of 19182 . To
date, we have removed 96 elm and oaks within the City and
we attribute alot of our success to citizens awareness and
positivecompliance with the existing tree ordinance . Once
again we have done major tree planting within our city parks
III with 220 large trees already planted and approximately 500
to 1, 000 seedlings . One of the items that doesn 't get alot
of attention, but we feel we have made some positive strides
in is City Hall flower planting . We have basically planted
the area around City Hall and have extended our planting
areas to include the Groveland Park sign.
2 . Volunteer Coaches Award Program - On Tuesday, August 6 ,
our staff had a final banquet for youth volunteer coaches
at which time jackets were awarded to each of our summer
coaches . Staff will be providing an example of the jacket
which was awarded to the coaches and the concept was
extremely well received by the coaches and we hope to
continue it for the remainder of 1983 .
3 . Golf Course Update - Staff has been discussing with a couple
of the Councilmembers the feasibility of developing a golf
course on the northern edge of the City . Staff will be
providing a brief report as to how that has evolved and
what is occurring to date in the discussion of the feasibility
of developing a golf course .
4 . Corporate Program - Staff has met with representatives from
Honeywell and Medtronic firms to discuss how the City might
more closely interrelate with industry within the City of
Mounds View. To date, we have met with two firms and they
4111
both have been very interested in how the City might provide
services to the corporate sector .
