MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks and Recreation Commission
• FROM: Staff Ak,,41111
DATE : August 30 , 1983
RE : Aquatic Coordinator Position
The Mounds View City Council authorized the hiring of Ms .
Maureen Thielen on August 22, 1983 as the part-time aquatics
coordinator for the City of Mounds View as per the Parks and
Recreation Commission direction . Ms . Thielen will be attend-
ing the September 1 Parks and Recreation Commission meeting
to provide a brief review of her background and discuss
potential modifications in the City ' s aquatics program. In
addition to the introduction to Ms . Thielen, staff has included
a copy of the memorandum of understanding and/or employment
agreement with Ms . Thielen as well as the joint powers agreement
with the school district. Staff is extremely excited to have
someone of the caliber of Maureen on staff with us and we feel
that there will be some major changes that will develop in
our year-round aquatic program at both Lakeside Park and the
Edgewood Community Center pool .
The Lakeside Park Beach program drew to a close on Sunday, August
28 with a fairly successful summer swimming program. It has
• become apparent already through Ms . Thielen's observations that
there are a number of changes that need to made at the beach
such as closer supervision of the guards , modifications to the
building and a review of the existing raft locations . One of
the major issues that developed during the summer of 1983 was
that we combined the Edgewood Pool staff and the outdoor beach
staff for the first time into one cohesive unit . We found this
to be a very positive change and we would envision that we would
utilize a combined staff in the future .
In addition, September-October we have included copies of the
P
City Newsletter which includes the fall swimming program which
has been expanded to include six daytime swimming sessions as
well as a full compliment of Saturday and evening classes . Hope-
fully with the addition of ,Ms . Thielen, we will be able to pro-
vide a better aquatics background and update for the commission
on a quarterly basis during the coming year .
BKA/sll
1110
