MEMO TO: Mounds V -w Parks and Recreation Commission
• 4
FROM: Sta.-6 II
DATE: Dec mber 15 , 1982
RE: Use of pitching machine
Staff has attached a brief synopsis of a report that outlines the
benefits of using a pitching machine versus regular pitching in
youth league baseball. The City of Edina has been offering a
program using the Juggs pitching machine for the past three years
which has become their third transition program into fast pitch
or little league baseball . The transition process starts with the
initial T-ball program which goes to an eight-ball program where
the coach pitches to his own players , then at the nine year old
or fourth grade level, they get into a Juggs (which is a brand name)
pitching machine and finally into fast pitch or little league base-
ball.
Staff has included this item as strictly an informational item as
we feel it needs some policy review from the Park Commission before
staff continues to proceed with the feasibility of purchasing pitch-
ing machines for the nine year old or fourth grade level . Although
we have not done any extensive research on this particular issue,
1111
we feel that we could establish a pitching machine league very simply
with the purchase of two possibly three pitching machines that would
be available at possibly Lambert and Groveland Parks with the machine
available to all teams for practice in the park shelter buildings .
Staff will be available to respond to any questions or concerns the
Park Commission may have on this issue, but staff is looking for some
type of direction as to whether or not to proceed with the feasibility
of developing such a program during the summer of 1983 .
BKA/sll
4111
