MEMO TO: Bruce Anderson, Director
• Parks , Recreation and Forestry
FROM: Rick Wriskey, City 6* Der
DATE: August 6, 1982
RE: 1982 Mid-season Forestry Report
DUTCH ELM AND OAK WILT DISEASES
Approximately 125 elms and oaks have been marked for removal as of August 10.
At this time last year, 200 diseased trees were marked. The decrease is due,
in part, to the late spring. However, I do feel the tree disease incidence
is significantly down from last year and predict a yearly total of about 230
diseased trees.
Resident compliance with diseased tree removal procedures has been good. This
hear, however, a greater proportion of home owners are keeping and debarking
the wood from their diseased trees. There has been a distinct extra effort
to increase monitoring of this increased wood retention (and sharing with
neighbors) and to stress the importance of debarking and treating this wood
as a special problem.
TREE PLANTING AND SUMMER MAINTENANCE
The bulk of this year's tree planting (332 trees in Silver View, City Hall ,
Random and Ardan Parks) was terminated with the onset of warm summer weather.
Transplanting of nursery stock and tree donations will take place in September
and October.
With the timely help of the summer C.E.T.A. crew and part-time employees, I
expect ultimate survival rates of 85% in Silver View Park and 100% in City Hall
Park of all bare root trees planted there in the spring of 1982. The watering
and mulching were especially crucial with the hot and dry summer we are
currently experiencing.
OTHER DISEASE AND INSECT PROBLEMS
Spring of 1982 brought with it an unusual array of insect and disease pests
affecting most ornamental and shade trees in Mounds View. Exact details will
be forthcoming in the year end report.
Currently being seen are drought problems with some trees not being watered and
a scattering of trees suffering from insect galls , fireblight bacteria and apple
scab fungus.
TREE ORDERS FOR 1983
Subsequent to approval of the 1983 tree purchasing budget, orders were placed
for about 300 trees of 15 different species to be planted in the spring of 1983.
This early order was placed to ensure retention of desired sizes and varieties .
