MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
? FROM: MARY SAARION, DIRECTOR
PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: MARCH 10, 1987
• RE: PORTABLE CLASSROOM OPPORTUNITY
As you have been briefed by Clerk Administrator Don Pauley, the School District
may be offering the Pinewood portable classroom to the City. I am very excited
about this possible opportunity. Listed below are some uses that I see for
such a facility.
1 . The facility would be the standard place for our adult exercise programs.
Currently our programs are held at Pinewood School cafeteria. The
participants complain about the dirty floors and the frequent
cancellations due to school functions.
Using our own facility, we would have control over its cleanliness and
would not have the cancellations which often kill a program.
2. The facility would be used for our pre—school programs during the daytime.
3. The facility would be used for scout meetings for both boys and girls.
Currently, the schools are not able to meet the requests for scout
meetings. This facility would he great for such meetings.
4. Craft programs would be held from this facility as well as many other
adult art activities.
5. School days out programs would be held at this facility. The major
411 advantage of a building like this is that it would not be used as a rink
shelter or summer playground center and therefore it would be constantly
available for classes. Because it would only be used for classes, the
building would remain in better care because the useage would be less
intense than traditional park shelter buildings.
My choice of location for this building is Random Park for these reasons:
1 . The building would be next to a tot lot for enhancement of a pre—school
facility.
2. The building would be highly visible from Long Lake Road and Ridge Lane
and this would cut down the vandalism potential.
3. The building would enjoy easy accessibility and is located in an area which
is easy to see and locate.
4. Random Park land does not offer any other uses. By placing this building
on the site, this park will enjoy frequent use of passive and controlled
activity that will not disrupt the neighborhood.
5. The cost of electricity to Random Park is very minimal ($450.00) due to
easy neighborhood line access.
