MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks an Recr a ion Commission
• FROM: Bruce K. Andersbn,- I ct r
Parks
Recreation nd o sty
DATE: April 29, 1986
RE: Monthly Staff Update - April , 1986
The following issues and programs are outlined to provide the
Commission with a better overview of our department' s day to day
operations. Each of the listed items are strictly informational
and not intended for formal Commission action.
1 . Puppet Wagon Truck - The City has recently sold its puppet
wagon truck and is waiting to hear from the State surplus
department regarding the acquisition of a new vehicle . The
City is proposing to buy a van that will be modified for the
puppet wagon program in 1986 with the $4 ,000 which has been
budgeted by the City Council .
2. Deanna Mortenson returns - Our department is fortunate to
have Deanna Mortenson, part-time clerical assistant, join us
once again during our peak summer months. Deanna officially
joined us April 21 and will be with us through the end of
July.
1111 3. Compost site - The compost site formally opened on Saturday,
April 19, 1986 and we have once again had tremendous response
from the community regarding usage of the facility. Surpris-
ingly, the major use of the site has been to pick up compost
for residential gardens. The quality of our compost is
extremely high and as can be noted in the enclosed sheet from
Ramsey County, we have the second lowest levels in the Coun-
ty. The City provided a front-end loader, at no cost, to
load vehicles the past two Saturdays and this appears to be a
very positive public relations effort by the City.
4. Tree planting - During the past two weeks, City Forester
Wriskey, along with a variety of City residents, have been
planting shrubbery around the three tot lots at Random Park ,
Groveland Park and the front of City Hall . The plantings are
a welcome addition to the City' s landscape .
5. Honeywell donation - Staff received a $2,000 donation from
Honeywell for the Neighborhood Park Planning Fund, which was
formally presented at the Monday, April 14 City Council meet-
ing. The City Council , in turn , awarded Honeywell a resolu-
tion commending their generous donation to the City' s park
system.
6. Spring Lake Park Compost Site - Staff met with the Spring
4111 Lake Park Energy Council on Thursday, April 17 , 1986 to dis-
cuss the establishment of a compost program in Spring Lake
Park. Staff strongly recommended this issue, as we are
receiving a great deal of usage ( 15% - 18%) from Spring Lake
Park residents. Although the day has not come yet, I
envision that we will be checking Mounds View identifications
to utilize the compost site if the current demand continues.
