MEMO TO: Mounds View Parks--and-,gecxat'om Commission
7
110 FROM: Bruce K. An erson, i '_Tec •r 1
Parks, Recreat a d \Fi - - i
h )\\_
DATE: February 25, 19. 1
RE: Monthly staff update =-'bruary, 1986
The following issues and programs are outlined to provide the Commission with
a better overview of our department's day to day operations. Each of the
listed items are strictly informational and not intended for formal Commission
action.
1. Puppet Wagon Truck — The City has budgeted $4,000 to purchase a new puppet
wagon truck in 1986, and we currently have the 1969 van up for sale.
Staff is currently exploring the feasibility of purchasing a van that will
serve as a wellness van as well as a City puppet wagon truck.
2. Lake Region Hockey — Staff has forwarded a letter to Lake Region Hockey
indicating that the City is not interested (at this time) in pursuing a
second referendum for the development of a recreation/community center/ice
arena. I have indicated that we are still interested in working out an
agreement to donate some property at Silver View Park should they be able
to fund the entire project.
3. Energy Week — Our department sponsored four energy week activities, Febru—
ary 18 — 21. Each of the events; two ski trips, special gym and swim and
111/1 roller skating, were very successful with over 100 residents participating
in the week long special events.
4. Winter Skating — The 1985-86 winter skating program drew to a close on
Sunday, February 23, 1986. Skating was available for ten weeks this year,
which is longer than usual. The park maintenance division did a fine job
in maintaining the ice during the last four weeks due to some changes in
flooding techniques and we hope we can continue to improve our ice quality
for the 1986-87 season.
5. Comparable Worth — The City has been involved in the development of a com—
parable worth program which is mandated by the State, for the past 14
months. The study was initially set to be completed in November of 1985
and has now been delayed until at least May, 1986. Once the comparable
worth study is complete, staff will be reviewing the data to determine how
we can provide parity to the existing system.
6. Recreation/Athletic Supervisor — Mary Saarion will be on vacation the week
of March 3. She and her husband will be in the Cayman Islands during that
week.
7. Gymnastics Equipment — The City has recently purchased a balance beam that
will be used for our gymnastics programs as well as Lindy's Gymnastics
Club. The City has been utilizing School District equipment for the past
five years, and by purchasing our own balance beam, we will have greater
flexibility in programming. while replacing a very worn and tired beam.
1110 BKA/sll
