MEMO TO: MAYOR AND COUNCILMEMBERS
FROM: MARY SAARION DIRECTOR Y
• PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY
DATE: AUGUST 3, 1988 OA\-\{
SUBJECT: "WATER A PARK TREE" CAMPAIGN
The City Council's suggestion for a "Water a Park Tree" program has been
implemented into a publicity campaign. An article has been released to the
New Brighton Bulletin, information placed on cable TV, announcement on the
City Hall marque, article placed in the City Newsletter and letters sent to
local service organizations including Girl Scouts and Boy Scouts, church
youth groups, Mounds View Baseball Association, Mounds View/New Brighton
Soccer Association and fall softball leagues.
Public Works staff have placed faucets at each hydrant. Four attachments were
purchased and hoses have been purchased for each hydrant. Two concerns are
that hoses may be stolen and water kept running. Fire hydrants and hoses were
used at Summer Playcenters for water before the drinking fountains were
installed. Several hoses were stolen and water turned on and kept running,
flooding areas in the park. For this reason, we required leaders to lock the
• hoses in the park buildings and disconnect the faucet handles when leaving
the park.
Yesterday Forester Rick Wriskey informed me that he was leaving the sprinkler
up at Groveland on the black locust tree grove all night in hopes of saving
the trees. This morning, public works staff found the hoses cut and water
spewing from the hydrant.
Hopefully problems will not occur during this program, but the possibility
exists. The police department has been asked to keep an eye out for
faucets that remain running during the evening hours.
111
