• MEMO TO: Parks & Recreation Commissioners
FROM: Mary Saarion, Director of Parks, Recreation & Forestry
DATE: March 17, 1988
RE: Hillview Park
Hillview Park building is the only park building which does
not have a permanent foundation. Because of this, permanent
entrances have not been installed. Also, the space under
the building is a popular place for bee hives and wasp and
hornets nests . This is a serious problem in the summer months
when the building houses the children' s playground programs.
Before the new playground equipment and drinking fountain is
installed, the Commission should look at various park site
plans . I have 3 possibilities (attached) . Perhaps you have
a suggestion. I have enclosed a map which you can doodle on
to come up with a suggestion.
Parking seems to be a problem. Currently skating rink parking
is offered in the park, next to the building. This arrangement
tears up the turf. Also, driving in a park is something that
. we discourage. It is also a safety hazard since it is not a
designated road or parking lot.
Off street parking would be great but it does take precious
space from an already too-tiny park.
Also, participant traffic flow must be considered. A building
should be located in the center of activity to allow spoke-like
flow. It seems impossible to achieve it in this park.
Other considerations are the Swale, the two large trees off of
Hillview Road and the cost of electrical changes. The hockey rink
location is probably permanent since lighting fixtures are
already installed . . . but all this and other issues are up
for discussion. Bring your site sketch and ideas to the meeting .
•
