The St.Paul project, loosely designed after similar projects in
Philadelphia,New York, Boston, Chicago, Seattle, St. Louis and San Jose,
was described by Diane Emerson, Vice President of the Minnesota State
Horticultural Society. Under the auspices of the Horticultural Society,St.
Paul Green will have a full-time staff person to coordinate activities.
If you are interested in working on St. Paul Green, call Bill Anderson at
298-4323.
• Children's Fishing The childhood memory of strolling to a nearby fishing hole, throwing in a
Ponds are Catching On line and spending a lazy summer day trying to hook fish mom or dad just
might cook lingers hazily in the minds of many an adult. Access to places
for kids to carry on the tradition in an urban environment is not always
easy. The DNR's Children's Fishing Pond Program is designed to meet the
need.
Twenty-four ponds in the seven county metro area are currently in the
program. The"mini lakes"are typically shallow and winter kill normally
prevents the natural development of game fish. Throughout the spring the
DNR stocks catchable-size bluegills, crappies, and bullheads, fish that are
particularly appealing to young fishers.
The DNR considers several factors in determining which ponds to include
in the program. The program must be requested by a local unit of govern-
ment and that government must agree to assist in its management. There
must also be a public access to the lake and there must be a population
center nearby. Usually ponds are located where there is limited nearby
fishing available.
Children's fishing ponds in Ramsey County include: Bennett Lake,Roseville
(includes a fishing pier);Loeb Lake,St.Paul at Maryland and Mackubin;Oak
Lake Park Pond,Moundsview at County Road H2 & Silver Lake Road.
