a
MEMO TO: MAYOR AND CITY COUNCIL
FROM: MARY. SAARION, DIRECTOR '' •p• ' •+
PARKS, RECREATION AND FORESTRY 0 `,:•> •,,,
DATE: OCTOBER 8, 1987
RE: LAKESIDE PARK BEACH HOUSE VANDALISM
This past weekend, Lakeside Park Beach House was vandalized. The Fridley
Police were driving on the south side of County Road I and noticed smoke
corning from the beach house windows. The Fire Department was called.
Evidently young children (determined by small footprints in the soot) had
entered the building and started some cardboard boxes containing megaphones on
fire in the wheelbarrow. The only detected damage to equipment was the
telephone and one megaphone. However, a thin coat of soot is covering the
entire interior of the building including equipment, carpet, walls, ceiling,
etc. Forced entry was not detected. It is presumed by Spring Lake Park that
perhaps the Spring Lake Park maintenance crew did not secure the doors
properly when they last checked the building.
Lakeside Park has a $5,000 deductable insurance policy so it probably will not
pay to claim this damage. It is now in the hands of Spring Lake Park to find
the time to clean the sooted building. If unable to accomplish the task, the
beach staff in the spring of 1988 will have an extra duty during beach
preparation.
MS/s1
s
•
