• MOUNDS VIEW Exhibit A
Parks & Recreation Commission
June 28, 2000, 6:30 p.m.
Minutes
Commissioners present: Rich Sonterre, Frank Silvis, Theresa Lexcen, Sherry Gunn, Stan
McDonald, Dave Long, and Tony Zuk.
Commissioners absent: Dawn Little, and Mike Szczepanski
Staff present: Terri Blattenbauer(YMCA)
A motion was made to approve the minutes from April 26 by Rich, seconded by Tony. A
motion was also made to approve the minutes from a special meeting on June 22 by
Sherry, seconded by Rich.
Ron Nelson, a resident from Oakwood Drive was present to make a requisition to the
Commission for some amenities for kids to utilize with bikes, in-line skates and
skateboards. He has a concern for their safety. It is common for several youth to use the
curbing in the Oakwood park area. His idea includes the use of volunteers and private
• donations to support a project of this nature. Staff will check with neighboring
communities who have such a structure to identify some specifics. This is an item that is
a part of the "wish list" developed by the Commission.
Cliff Ash a resident from Silver Lake Woods housing community was also present to
discuss some issues with the Commission. He indicated the vistas have become
overgrown, there are some dead trees along the path, and the cracks that were identified
at an earlier meeting, have not been filled. Cliff believes this to be dangerous to users of
the path. Cliff requested that the east bay of the pond be treated for the lily problem. He
also added that there is a board missing on a northside bench, and boils forming on the
new path.
Staff reported on the YMCA summer programs being offered. Participant numbers have
increased by 180 as a result of new programs from last summer. This is due primarily to
the added quality, older, more mature staff, and overall enhancement. Staff speculates
that end of the season evaluations will confirm this. Results will be shared with the
Commission. Commissioners indicated that it may be more appealing to change the
name of"Sr. Dining" to "Sr. Social". This may attract more participants.
A memo regarding Spring Lake was briefly discussed. A resident sent a memo to the
DNR regarding the management of the lake, fishing access, etc. He had not received any
answers. The Commission was informed by staff that the lake is too shallow, there is not
enough oxygen. The water comes from street run off and there is no other outlets.
•
