Mary Benz was recently
appointed to the Parks and Recreation Commission, filling the recent vacancy of Wayne
Burmeister. Mary Benz and her family have been participants in many recreation activities. Both
Mary and her husband have volunteered as youth coaches throughout the years for many different
youth sports. We will be fortunate to have Mary's perspective on recreational programming and
park improvements.
The City Council approved adoption of the Ramsey County Master Plan for the North Regional
Rice Creek Corridor Trail as the Parks and Recreation Commission recommended. In addition,
the Mayors and City Administrator attended a joint meeting to discuss further plans for a joint
athletic complex at location unknown. As you recommended, this effort has been tabled by the
group because of the high cost and lack of location. Instead, cities and athletic associations and
school district will be coordinating efforts to ensure that athletic facilities are available even if it
means that children play in other cities. The former philosophy of hesitancy for crossing city
borders is vanishing and there seems to be more openness to welcoming persons from other cities
to use fields (within the school district at least). I will expand upon this at the meeting.
Ice rinks closed about one week earlier than usual due to the warm temperatures. Even with
such an odd winter, the ice rinks were busy especially between the times of 5:00 - 7:00 p.m. and
weekends. Believe it or not, I received absolutely no calls complaining about the ice - everyone
was very accepting that the weather was not conducive to good ice-making and therefore seemed
to accept whatever ice there was to skate on.
Spring recreation activities brochure (part of the City Newsletter) is at the printer and will be in
the homes hopefully by the first week of March. This edition publicizes registration information
for summer youth athletics.
The regular Parks and Recreation Commission meeting will meet Thursday, February 26 at 6:30
p.m. at City Hall. If you are unable to attend please call me at 717-4041. See you then!
lbSincerely, , •
Mary S rion, Director of Parks, Recreation& Forestry
MUTED WITH
2401 Highway 10• Mounds View, MN 55112-1499 t e
SOY INK T„
00m,,mea PaoIM
Equal Opprotunity Employer
