MEMO TO: RIC MINETOR
FROM: MARY SAARION
DATE: JUNE 1, 1992
SUBJECT: COMMISSIONERS CONCERNS REGARDING PARK TURF
CHEMICAL TREATMENT
Last Thursday I took a day of comp time but attended the Park and Recreation
Commission meeting in the evening. I was not aware that Groveland Park had been
chemically treated for weeds. However, two Commissioners stated that they had been to
Groveland Park and had concerns regarding the chemical treatment of the parks. The
strong chemical odor was a concern of theirs plus the fact that so many people were
using the park the same day as the chemical treatment, realizing that warning signs were
put up.
The Commission asked me to relay their concerns, requesting research into other
products used by neighboring communities as fertilizer / broad leaf weed killer
treatments. Also, they asked if the City could schedule treatment at times when the
• parks are least likely to be used in coordination with the Parks, Recreation & Forestry
Department.
One option that was discussed was the treatment on low volume use days, which typically
would be Fridays at the neighborhood parks, since Friday evenings tend to be the least
likely weekday evening to be reserved for ballfield games or practices.
•
